If you are looking for free legal divorce advise, the best place to look might not be the internet, it might be your local phone book (or I guess searching for local info on the internet…).

Local legal aid agencies or organizations might be the best place to look for advice on handling difficult divorce situations. Of course you can look around on the internet by searching and going to forums to get as much helpful advice as possible, but you have to be careful what you get.

While free advice is great, you might want to buy a divorce guide if you can afford it, especially if you are a guy, because the system is set up mainly for women. The reason for buying something is it gives you some knowledge even when you are getting help from a free legal aid organization. Whether it is a good divorce or a screwed up divorce it can effect you for the rest of your life.

If you’ve got some assets and/or kids involved it’s important to get some good advice before getting into the divorce procedure. There are good books out there that aren’t expensive and get really make your life a lot easier when it comes to divorce.

There are some lawyers that take a certain percentage of pro bono work, which is ‘working for free’ in lawyer speak, so that’s another option open to you. The thing you have to do, even if you’re working with a lawyer, is to work at educating yourself the best you can. For example, my divorce paperwork had errors in it (we had a cheap divorce done by paralegals) and you just have to get yourself as smart about this stuff as you can. A mistake could haunt you years down the road.
